'LYON'S MAID HAUNTED HOUSE' - Ice-Cream Lolly

I have a vague memory of these lollys from Lyon's Maid, I seem to remember the pictures that were printed on the actual lolly. The Lyons website [http://www.kzwp.com/lyons/group2.htm] is a wonderful site that covers all products made by the famous company and has some great pictures too. This is the only place that I could find anything on the Haunted House ice-Cream lolly, it says that Haunted House came out in 1973 and was priced 4 pence. The printed pictures on the lolly included Frankenstein's Monster, Spook, Skeleton, Spider and web, Bats, Witch, and A Creature. The pictures were printed in pink, orange, red, green, and blue and were edible. The Pictures above show the Haunted House wrapper and 7 promotional badges, not sure how many there were in a set, but I would guess at least 8 - 10.

Everyday I come to this blog and am astounded by the sheer amount of horror related product there apparently was back then. If only my parents had been paying more attention when I was little, like I do these days for my son. If I find ANYTHING horror related, even if it's only got a little black bat on it I buy it. Of course nothing packaged these days can match the awesomeness of practically everything you post here. Kudos man!

I too am astounded at times, I sometimes come across British horror related stuff I never knew about or had forgotten about, you can't expect to know everything that was released I suppose.
I think that the 60's and 70's were certainly the best decades for fantastic packaging.

Thanks for letting me know about how many Haunted House badges there were.

Definitely, but don't forget the 50's too!

Yes I agree the 50's were also great for packaging especially anything sci-fi connected.

Not sure why, but the Skeleton design turned up most often in these lollies. They were a bit more expensive than the ice water kind and had basically the same stuff as mini-milk. About 1978, a very elaborate monster lolly came out with a colour changing window. A company had invented a heat changing paper. It was previewed on the BBC's Tomorrow's world show. The lollies were all red on the wrapper, until you took it out and you saw frankenstein's Monster (usually). The great thing was it could be reversed. The lolly was actually a cheap water ice which probably was done to cover the cost of the expensive wrapper.

Hi
Thanks for the information on the haunted House Lolly. Can you remember what the Monster ice-Lolly was called?, it sounds great.
It would be great to see that feature on Tomorrows World, not sure if I remember seeing that before.

I too remember lolly with the colour change window.
I seem to recall it being called Horror Lolly but I might be wrong.
I'd love to see the packaging again.

Thanks for the link, the Walls Monster Lolly looks great, Iwonder if they did other pictures on the wrappers.

They did. I remember collecting quite a few (more than 12 at least). In a fit of stupidity I threw them away later as I decided they were rubbish. Oh for a time machine!!!
